7 Steps To Choose The Best Skin Care

Updated: Jul 15

If you have acne, dry skin, sensitive skin, wrinkles, sun spots, dark undereyes, and more common skin issues this is the article for you.

You're tired of going to the counters at the pharmacy's beauty department for advice, or from every beautician who prefers their line of skin care over the others. Spending hundreds of dollars to be disappointed and maybe worst off than before. You want to know how to look like JLO at 50 like she's some how mastered, and wonder why you can't even just get rid of your skin issues at half of her age.

I get it.

Once upon a time I had the worst acne, I tried endless varieties of products, wasting thousands of dollars over years and slowly damaging my skin in doing so. Frustrated by the "suggested" product by each employee, or companies promising their products are "the best".  By the age of 19, I had gotten rid of acne, but replaced it with my skin being so sensitive a warm shower burnt, and I could already see aging setting in.

THAT'S IT! I HAD IT!

In a climatic gesture I got up, threw every product for skin care I had in the kitchen garbage can, grabbed my laptop and got onto the web. I declared, I would find the solution for myself.

Let me share my wisdom with you.

My name is Chrislynn L., a Registered Myomassology Practitioner, Certified in Skin & Spa Therapies, Certified Laser Technician skilled in invasive and noninvasive facials, and Certified Microchanneling Stem Cell Technician.

My skin glows, I don't wear makeup and I wish someone would have told me what I'm about to share with you back in my teens.

1. IT STARTS FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Start increasing your water intake, cut out all sugars (or as many as you can live without), and take a good look at your diet. Does it consist of fruits and veggies mostly? Pure proteins? Or are you eating processed foods more often than not? Feeding our body with the right nutrition will remove toxins that often come out is some way or another. Your body's PH balance is a key factor is all of your body's health, skin being one of them. Also, play with food elimination, I realized if I ate breads, pastas, or gluten in general, my skin paid the price. Give this time, make the cuts, increase the rest and give it a few weeks to notice a difference.

2. IT'S IN THE INGREDIENTS

There are a few things to know about ingredients, starting with chemicals. There are some good sites that you can google each ingredient in a product and it tells you how harmful it is. You can even google it! Find out what the ingredient is used for, and decide if you want that on your skin. I started to realized how important organic ingredients were, free of harmful chemicals, and next I realized there was a difference in quality. Quality organic lines can't typically be found in pharmacies, or pyramid companies. Even the "organic clean" lines being promoted, once I googled their ingredient list I was shocked. (I won't name them, but you can google the ingredients in any list on the back of your bottle to see for yourself). There were only a short list of companies I found that were truly clean and high in quality, and they tend to only be sold in Spas. Now I understood it, my younger self used to think it was pointless to spend on lines sold at spas, that you were only buying for bragging rights. Not true. There's no way quality ingredients could be collected, products manufactured, then bottled, and distributed for a cheap amount. Have you ever tried making your own face cream? It's expensive! You're paying for the quality of the line. Not to mention, a company can legally call itself organic even if only a percentage of it's ingredients aren't. So you need to research each line and what's inside. I have 3 favourites, but I'll let you message me if you want my help.

3. YOUR SKIN TYPE RIGHT NOW MIGHT NOT BE YOUR SKIN TYPE

You might have an oily skin type, however from stripping the skin too much of it's natural oils, causing damage. Over exfoliation is a huge mistaken concept. Your cleanser should be just enough to wash away dirt, debris, and lightly fluff off dead skin. Also, masques should only be used once a week, and only once a month if there's harsher chemicals like glycol. I also recommend enzyme exfoliations, which means a weekly masque with exfoliating ingredients, but not face cloths, or circulating brushes that tug on your skin. If your skin IS sensitive right now, when you start with your new organic spa line you find, start with a mini bottle if you can. After 2-3 weeks your skin should adjust, creating it's own oils. If you find your skin is extremely oily afterwards, you actually had an oily skin type, but over exfoliation was the problem. Now slowly move up their line to an acne/oil cleanser. If you have acne and want to switch to get rid of it, go right away to the oily/acne skin type cleanser, if after 2 weeks it hasn't improved, I'd suggest using their weekly enzyme masque, or 2% glycolic serum every other night to exfoliate and help. There are usually serums you can use to boost results too, like spot treatments. It may take a few weeks but give it time.

4. WHAT YOU DO TO YOUR FACE, DO TO YOUR NECK. HECK, DON'T FORGET YOUR BODY EITHER

There aren't the same amount of sebaceous glands creating sebum (oil) on our necks as on ur faces. In order to keep all of our skin looking healthy and youthful, moisturize and use serums on your neck everyday! Also make sure you moisturize your body while you're at it, and again research your products. If you can spend $50 at dinner, don't cringe at a $50 price tag for a product you'll use all month long.

5. GO AU NATURELLE

I love and support women and men no matter how they want to decorate their face, and accentuate their features. There is some benefits to going without make-up, if possible. Number one, it gives your skin a break and let's it breathe. Often we breakout because we're clogging pores, from chemicals in the products we use, and it can sometimes lead to some aging affects. I'm in love with tinted moisturizers. It's dual purpose, usually light and fluffy so your skin can breathe, makes you look evenly toned, and usually filled with ingredients like peptides if with the right company.

6. FACIALS BY PROS SHOULD BE DONE AT THE VERY LEAST SEASONALLY

If you're invested in a good skin care line, and you know the spa who uses those products in their facials, book some professional facials. Many of those skin care lines have much more potent products that are only to be used by an aesthetician. They can customize a facial for your skin goals and problems. Plus advancements of laser and other ways to heal past acne scars, or deep sensitivity could repair years of damage. Your skin is an organ like any other, and requires nutrition. Why just brush your teeth, when you can go in and get a professional cleaning once in awhile? Same goes for your skin, seek a professional who has education behind them to help you!

7. DOING ONLY FACIALS AND NOT DAILY SKIN CARE IS LIKE GOING TO THE DENTIST FOR CLEANINGS BUT NOT BRUSHING YOUR TEETH EVERYDAY

If you're skimping out on the day to day regime, yet splurge on face masks and facials, that's merely not enough. Day to day skin care provide yours skin with the ability to cleanse dirt, allows it to breathe, removes metals from water, unclogs pores, adds nutrition, and moisture. Don't skip, cleanse your skin daily and moisturize daily. The serums and eye creams can and should be used often as well, but at the least to the two. It doesn't need to be a huge process to clean your face everyday. Find something that works for you.
